LONDON The row over so called Camelot "fatcats" ended in compromise yesterday with directors backing away from resignation and agreeing to pay at least part of their National Lottery bonuses to charity. In another move, the lottery operators announced plans to plough interest raised from unclaimed prizes into charities instead of the company coffers. That could mean a total, of £24 million extra going to charities, the Camelot chairman, Sir George Russell, said.

The Heritage Secretary, Mr Chris Smith, whose fort at Camelot at one point threatened to prompt a walkout by the directors, welcomed the news. He said: "I now regard the matter as closed."
