There were 6,563 fewer cars licensed in October 2001 than in October 2000, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). This represents a decrease of 29.4 per cent.

The figures show 153,615 new private cars were licensed in the first 10 months of 2001, representing a decrease of 28.5 per cent.

A total of 221,353 of all vehicles were licensed in the first 10 months of 2001 compared with 293,281 in the same period of 2000, a decrease of 24.5 per cent.

The highest number of new private cars licensed in October 2001, classified by make are: Volkswagen (795) followed by Renault (682), Ford (610), Fiat (534 ), Nissan (520) and Toyota (519).
