Paris - Prison terms that Carlos the Jackal faces in France may ensure he will never have to answer for guerrilla attacks in other countries, legal sources said yesterday.

In his first trial, opening under heavy security in Paris yesterday, Illich Ramirez Sanchez is accused of killing two French counter-espionage officers and a Lebanese accompliceturned-informer in 1975, and of wounding a third French officer.

The shooting earned him a life sentence in absentia five years ago on three counts of murder and one of attempted murder. Under French law, he is now entitled to be retried in person. If he again receives a life sentence, he could spend up to 30 years in prison.
