A Louth man who attacked a stranger exiting a pub and left him bleeding on the ground has had his sentence adjourned to let him gather €5,000 compensation.

Patrick Grimes (48) had the amount raised for his victim, Larry Neville (51), but spent the proceeds on his mother’s funeral expenses shortly after Christmas.

Luigi Rea, defending, submitted to Judge Katherine Delahunt that his client had made arrangements with his employer and would have the money ready again next month.

Judge Delahunt accepted that Grimes, of West Court, Drogheda, had not come to adverse Garda attention since May 2008 and put the matter back for sentence next month.
