GAA:A postmortem for Patrick Dinsmore, the 16-year-old Gaelic footballer from county Down who collapsed and died during a minor club match, has not identified a conclusive cause of death.
Further tests are now being carried out to determine if sudden death syndrome, also known as sudden cardiac arrest, was the cause of the teenager’s death. Results of these tests will not be known for several weeks.
The Warrenpoint teenager would have celebrated his 17th birthday today and was also due to receive his GCSE results.
Dinsmore had been playing for his club St Peter’s against local rivals St Bronagh’s in Rostrevor last Sunday.
He collapsed during the match at Greenpark Road and was treated by a doctor and two nurses who were at the ground. A defibrillator was also used but he could not be revived.
“Everything that that could be done was done for Patrick. [He was] a very highly respected player at our club and from a very well-known Warrenpoint family,” said Feargal McCormack, spokesman for St Peter’s.
Dinsmore’s funeral will take place in Warrenpoint tomorrow and his family have asked mourners to make donations to the Cormac Trust rather than bring flowers to the funeral Mass.
The Cormac Trust was established following the death of Tyrone’s Cormac McAnallen from sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 24 in 2004.
