The head of Turkey's Red Crescent resigned yesterday after a protracted media campaign accusing the relief organisation of being poorly managed and ill-equipped to cope with August's devastating earthquake.

"I think the Red Crescent does not deserve this unfair treatment," Mr Kemal Demir said. "In order that this attitude does not further undermine our Red Crescent, I am resigning from my post as chairman."

A popular television programme on Tuesday showed one of the organisation's depots full of moth-eaten supplies from the 1930s and medicine decades past its expiry date.

There was popular outrage at the Red Crescent's slow response and poor equipment, which included tents with holes in them.
