An investigation file on the death of the actor, Mr Robbie Doolin, is to be sent to the DPP, but gardai said yesterday it was unlikely charges would be brought in relation to his death.

It is understood Mr Doolin died of asphyxiation when attempts were made to restrain him outside the Pony Cabs taxi company in South Great George's Street in central Dublin in the early hours of Sunday morning, after an altercation.

Formal confirmation of the post-mortem results are not expected to be released to the media due to new Garda instructions to be circulated to stations shortly.

After drinking in a number of pubs in the South King Street area on Saturday night, Mr Doolin had been involved in a row with a security man outside the taxi depot at around 3 a.m. but left the scene to go home. He returned on his motorcycle with a baseball bat. He was restrained, but not struck.

He was unconscious when gardai arrived at the scene and was later pronounced dead in St James's Hospital. Mr Doolin suffered from asthma, and this may have contributed to his death.
