THERE were differing views on the provision of a child abuse charter, the Taoiseach said. He described it as an extremely "contentious and difficult" issue.

Mr Bruton said a number of professionals feared they might not be able to consult, advise and assist people if such consultations were registered. But there were strong concerns that such information was needed.

Replying to the Fianna Fail leader, Mr Bertie Ahern, he suggested a question be tabled to the Minister for Health Mr Noonan, for a detailed reply. Mr Ahern had asked him to update the House on what progress had been made on a register.
