Child rape scene criticised

London - Children's charities have criticised a London theatre production which calls for 13-year-olds to enact gang rape. Auditions to find five young teenagers were in progress yesterday for Fairgame by Rebecca Pritchard, which according to the theatre's description, includes "an horrific act of rape".

A Royal Court Theatre statement said: "No one will be cast without careful discussion of the play's subject matter and the commitment it involves, as well as formal permission from the parents or guardians of anyone under 16. Professionals will be on call if emotional or personal support is needed."

But child abuse charity Kidscape was outraged. Director Ms Michele Elliot said on London Tonight: "I think it is absolutely appalling. I think it is exploiting children. It is a form of child abuse and it is completely unnecessary."
