Two young children have been left badly shaken after a man attempted to hijack the car they were sitting in while they waited for their father in south Belfast this morning.

The owner of the Audi car was picking up a friend’s child at Bawnmore Road at around 9.00 am when the hijacker tried to drive off with the two children in the back seat.

The thief stalled the car, however, allowing the owner to catch up and smash the windscreen, a police spokesman said. There was scuffle before the hijacker ran off to a waiting Rover, which then sped off.

There were no arrests made.

The hijacker is described as around 6’2", thin build, with short fair hair.
