Two children, who found syringes in an area of Derry known to be frequented by drug users, have received medical treatment amid fears that they may have pricked themselves with the needles.
The health scare was sparked off when the police recovered two syringes from the yard of the Post Office sorting office in Great James Street late on Sunday afternoon.
"It is understood that the children, aged nine and 12, twelve, had found the syringes a short time earlier in William Street car park and then threw them over the Post Office wall," said a police spokesman said.
