Washington - Chinese authorities have suppressed several hundred Catholic and Protestant groups this year, staging raids in homes where they worship and subjecting leaders to long interrogations and sometimes beatings, the State Department said yesterday.

Its report on religious freedom in 78 countries was prepared at the request of Congress. It highlighted the impact of an October 1996 policy directive that launched Beijing's campaign against religious groups that had not received state authorisation. - (Reuter)
