The Chinese authorities have detained a US citizen of Chinese origin in the southern city of Guangzhou on suspicion of spying for Taiwan, the US State Department said today.

The man, Mr Wu Jianming, was detained on April 8th and a US consular officer visited him on April 14th, State Department spokesman Mr Richard Boucher told a briefing.

The United States is concerned about the case, as it is about the detention of another US citizen and two Chinese citizens resident in the United States, he said.
