The leaders of Ireland¿s four main churches have made a joint statement calling for an end to the sectarian violence in Belfast.

The Primate of the Roman Catholic Church, Dr Sean Brady; Church of Ireland head Dr Robin Eames; Dr Russell Birney of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland; and Rev Winston Graham of the Methodist Church in Ireland met in Armagh today to discuss the situation.

They said in a joint statement that they were "deeply concerned" at the "immense fear" of people living in areas affected by the violence. They also commended the significant efforts of groups and individuals who are working for peace on the ground.

"We call for an immediate end to all street violence," the statement said. "We believe that a period of calm would pave the way for honest and sincere communication between those involved and could lead to a lasting peace".
