EDINBURGH - The setting up of a devolved Scottish Parliament was firmly supported by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland at its annual meeting in Edinburgh yesterday.

The assembly called on the British government to follow the conclusions of the Constitutional Convention in drawing up the White Paper on the basis of which Scots will be asked in a referendum if they want not only a parliament but one with tax raising powers.

The convention, composed of delegates from the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties, the churches and the trade unions, proposed a Scottish Parliament elected by proportional representation and vested with legislative powers and responsibilities for those areas of government currently administered by the Scottish Office.
