A COUPLE who claimed an allegedly faulty dishwasher was the source of a fire which destroyed their home have settled their High Court action against an electrical manufacturer. The case was over the loss of their home contents in the fire.

They claimed Electrolux was negligent in the supply of a Zanussi dishwasher which, they alleged, had been installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Tomas and Paula O’Ceallaigh, Corlummin, Foxford, Co Mayo, had sued Electrolux Group Ireland Ltd over the fire at their former home in Strokestown, Co Roscommon, in 2005. They claimed €109,641 for loss of contents over and above the €40,000 for contents covered by insurance. The damage to the house was covered by insurance.

The case against Electrolux, of Longmile Road, Dublin which had denied the claims against it, was due to begin yesterday before the President of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns.

After talks between the sides, the judge was told the matter had been settled. At the request of counsel, the judge struck out the proceedings, with costs in favour of the O’Ceallaighs. No details of the settlement were given.
