A Co Clare senior medical officer has warned of "a significant health risk" after a rise in whooping cough cases in south-east Clare. Brian McLaughlin reports.
Six suspected cases have been officially reported in the area to the Mid-Western Health Board, bringing the total in the county to eight, involving children aged four, five, six, eight and 10.
Dr Paul McKenna, Clare senior area medical officer, stressed the need for vigilance, and he urged parents to have children vaccinated. He confirmed that doctors in Co Clare had been given circulars advising them to remain alert for additional suspected cases.
Dr McKenna also pointed out that whooping cough can kill babies and result in brain damage to toddlersdue to increased pressure on the blood vessels.
He advised parents to contact their doctor if they suspect their child is experiencing symptoms.
