Classes on the way for laptop-shy councillors

Intensive training for councillors in the use of their laptops will be offered by Kerry County Council

Intensive training for councillors in the use of their laptops will be offered by Kerry County Council. This follows an unenthusiastic response to the first training session during the summer when fewer than half the councillors issued with council-provided laptops turned up.

However, a spokeswoman said the course, which included how to turn on and off the computer, may have been "too basic" for many of those who stayed away.

Kerry is one of a number of local authorities to issue computers to members in an effort to modernise the role of the councillor, and to cut down on paperwork.

Most councils have issued their members with desktop computers rather than the laptops offered to the 27 councillors in Kerry.

The spokeswoman for the council said Kerry was initially going to provide their councillors with desktop computers, but took advice from other local authorities and decided laptops offered "more flexibility" for members, particularly at meetings.

"It should help to make things more efficient," she said.

The new course, beginning at the end of the month, will involve a total of five, three-hour-long sessions covering a basic introduction, followed by sessions on Microsoft Word, Excel, internet use, e-mail and PowerPoint presentation.
