The Church of the Ascension, built in beautiful Timoleague, west Cork, in 1811, will provide a charming setting for a series of classical concerts next month. Famous for its mosaic interior, the church also contains some of the finest stained-glass windows in Co Cork.
Nowadays, the church forms part of the Kilgarriffe Union; its rector is the Rev Ian Jones. A restoration drive has been co-ordinated by the Fleming Trust, which bears the name of the Rev Lionel Rothwell Fleming, who was rector there from before the first World War until the 1940s.
The Hibernia String Trio will play at the inaugural concert on Sunday, July 11th. On July 18th, the Classic Brass Quintet will perform works by Purcell, Ewald, Horovitz and Gershwin. On July 25th, the Philomel Chamber Choir (conductor Ian Sexton) will perform Byrd's four-part Mass. Tickets are £10 for each concert or £25 for three.
