Washington - President Clinton urged China and Taiwan yesterday to calm escalating frictions between them, saying "no one should contemplate force here".

"This is something that we don't want to see escalate," Mr Clinton told a White House news conference. Asked about his decision to cancel a visit to Taipei by US defence officials, he said: "I didn't think this was the best time to do something which might excite either one side or the other and imply that a military solution is an acceptable alternative."
