President Clinton and his wife Hillary interrupted a weekend stay at the Camp David retreat yesterday to head to the New York City suburbs in search of a home.

Mrs Clinton, who is considering a run for one of New York's seats in the US Senate, must move to New York by election day in November 2000 to be eligible.

Leaving the Maryland presidential retreat, the Clintons flew on a small Air Force jet rather than the Boeing 747 that usually serves as Air Force One.

Their daughter, Chelsea, and Mrs Clinton's mother, Mrs Dorothy Rodham, were also on the trip.

The White House said the Clintons were touring Westchester County, north of New York City, where Mrs Clinton last week looked at a seven-bedroom colonial house in Edgemont priced at $1.7 million.

The house, sheltered from the street by trees and rocky walls, stands on 2.5 acres of land and is within walking distance of fashionable Scarsdale in southern Westchester County. The neighbour hood is 22 miles north of midtown Manhattan.

Even if Mrs Clinton does not run for the Senate, the Clintons plan to live in New York state after the president leaves office in January 2001, White House officials have said.
