Paris - Mr Daniel Cohn-Bendit, a Greens politician and leading figure in 1960s protest movements, has denied that he once molested children despite writing an article as a young man alluding to intimate encounters with minors.

Mr Cohn-Bendit, a German citizen who is head of the French Greens party at the European Parliament, used to work in a kindergarten and later wrote about how flirtation with young children in his care had taken on "an erotic character".

Asked about the article, which was published in Germany in 1975, he said that it contained passages which were "unbearably flippant", but said they bore no relation to reality.
