The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children will begin hearing parents' submissions on November 23rd on childhood vaccination.

The committee is to look at the issue in response to public concerns about the risks of vaccination, in particular reports of a possible link between the MMR or three-in-one vaccination and autism. It will also examine current vaccination policy and practices and poor take-up rates, which were blamed for the recent measles outbreak.

During the first phase, the committee will hear submissions from umbrella groups, including the HOPE project which provides information to parents with disabled and autistic children.

The committee chairman, Mr Batt O'Keeffe TD, said it was not planned to call parents to address the committee at this stage.

The second phase will hear submissions from health boards, the Department of Health, the National Disease Surveillance Centre, the Irish College of General Practitioners, the Irish Medical Organisation, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and the World Health Organisation.

Mr O'Keeffe said it was expected both phases would be completed by Christmas.
