A man has admitted killing an Irish commuter in London by throwing him in front of an Underground train during the rush hour.

A man has admitted killing an Irish commuter in London by throwing him in front of an Underground train during the rush hour.

Mehmet Bala (20), of Lower Clapton, east London, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. His plea of not guilty to murder was accepted by the court.

John Curran (52), died after being thrown from a crowded platform on the Victoria Line at Highbury and Islington station, north London, on July 7th, the first anniversary of the London bombings.

The machine operator, who worked in Greenwich, southeast London, was originally from Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

The Friday evening incident was witnessed by other commuters and shut down the northbound line.

Bala was chased by another passenger and identified from CCTV images.

After his death, members of Mr Curran's family released a statement saying: "The family of John Curran is devastated by the loss of a gentle and caring man.

"John was loved by all who knew him and his family and friends are mourning his loss.

"This was a senseless incident which took the life of a good man."

Mr Curran had been in England for 25 years and lived in north London with his long-term girlfriend.
