Bus Átha Cliath has been fined €5,000 by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court as a result of an accident in which a maintenance worker died from injuries after being crushed between buses.

Judge Desmond Hogan heard that workers at Phibsboro garage had disabled a safety system because it had been making noise continuously, alarming and annoying them.

The company pleaded guilty to a charge brought under the safety, health and welfare of workers legislation and regulations arising from the incident on January 25th, 2002, which resulted in the death of Mr Austin Mahon (63).

Bus Átha Cliath admitted its failure to ensure the traffic light alarm sensor system was "monitored and maintained so that any faults detected were rectified as quickly as possible" and to satisfy "an appropriate requirement that equipment and devises for the prevention of hazards therein" were maintained.
