Coastwatch Ireland has warned of a "serious" risk of water pollution from the amounts of disinfectant being used in yards and lanes as a defence against foot-and-mouth disease, writes Lorna Siggins.
It has appealed to those using disinfectant to ensure that it is applied well away from water courses and drains. It also warns users to adhere to instructions on the mix, and to ensure that the neat disinfectant cannot be washed into a drain.
