Me and my money: EOIN KELLYHurler, talks about his money habits
Are you a saver or a spender?I'm a saver. I don't really get a chance to spend much on things I would like to do during the season.
Do you shop around for better value?Yes. You can't beat TK Maxx.
What has been your most extravagant purchase ever and how much did it cost?An iPad2, $750.
What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money? My iPad2. I bought it in Washington this year and I am never off it. Seriously, I am on it 24/7 and I use it for everything. Work, e-mails, surfing. I think it's fantastic, although I might be a bit addicted to it.
Have you ever crossed the Border to shop? No, but I plan to visit Hollister in Belfast soon. I got a taste for the clothes on a few trips to America. Isn't that what everyone does when they go there? Shopping. I'm only just after hearing that Hollister has opened in Dublin, so I might have to check that out too. Not next weekend though, I'll be too busy.
Do you haggle over prices? Not at home. To be honest, I'd probably be a bit embarrassed. I do it when I am on holidays though. Nothing too serious, but if you're in a shop and you're buying a couple of tops in the one place you might as well ask them to throw something in for free. What's the worst thing they can say to you?
Has the recession changed your spending habits?Yes, like everyone else in the country. The big driver of the change for me has been listening to everyone else. Everyone says they are minding the pennies, and it is easy to buy into that. I certainly wouldn't be into shopping as much now as I might have been before.
Do you invest in shares?No.
Cash or card?Cash. It is easier to know what you spend.
What was the last thing you bought, and was it good value for money?A North Face jacket in Kildare Village. It was reduced from €110 to €70.
Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?Yes. My first summer working when I was 15 I saved up all summer and bought a stereo system.
Have you ever lost money?Yes, many is the horse that's still running.
Are you a gambler and, if so, have you ever had a big win?I had €25 each way on a horse in Cheltenham a couple of years back, which won at something like 7/1. I was so busy talking, I didn't see the horse win.
Is money important to you?Yes and no. Obviously you need to have it. It makes the world go round. You can't exactly go into a restaurant, eat a nice meal and then leave without paying. Money gives you the chance to do nice things like go on holiday, but you wouldn't want to become obsessed by it. It's nice to have enough, but "your health is your wealth".
How much money do you have on you now? €20.
