London - The wife of British Foreign Secretary, Mr Robin Cook, yesterday stood by her estranged husband after his announcement that he was leaving her for his office secretary, Ms Gaynor Regan, 10 years his junior.

Ms Margaret Cook (50), who works as a consultant haematologist at St John's Hospital in Livingston, near Edinburgh, issued a statement through her employers. "Whatever my husband's private life may have been, he has always been a very good Member of Parliament and is a very good Foreign Secretary. These are the only matters of concern to the general public."
