A 43-year-old Co Cork quantity surveyor who drove while over the legal alcohol limit has been jailed for three years by Cork Circuit Criminal Court for causing an accident which led to the death of a truck driver and caused injuries which paralysed his six-year-old daughter.

Gerard Conway, of Railway View, Fermoy, was three times over the legal limit when he crashed into an articulated truck being driven by Mr Jerome O'Mahony (39).

The accident happened on the night of June 3rd 2000 near Kilworth, Co Cork.

Mr O'Mahony died as a result of his injuries and his daughter, Ciara, was paralysed. Three-year-old Sinead O'Mahony was uninjured in the accident.

Conway was arrested at the time and accepted responsibility. He expressed deep remorse in court.

Judge A.G. Murphy described Conway as a "good man who acted recklessly" but said that society demanded the imposition of a custodial sentence in such cases.
