Journey times between Cork city and Killarney, Co Kerry will be reduced by up to 30 minutes following the opening of a €170 million road, the Minister for Transport said this morning.
Speaking at the opening of the Ballincollig bypass in Co Cork, Mr Brennan said the road would significantly relieve traffic congestion in the town and give a "major boost" to Cork's commericial and tourist road network.
"Today this new road, built to motorway standard, brings relief to years of congestion and frustration in Ballincollig," Mr Brennan said.
"The new route will give the town back to its people and allow for faster journey times and safer driving conditions for those taking the new route."
Mr Brennan added that two other notorious traffic bottlenecks - at Monasterevin, Co Laois and Cashel, Co Tipperary - would will be by-passed by the end of the year.
