The tragic deaths of two young Chinese students had saddened the entire community, the Dublin City Coroner, Dr Brian Farrell, told relatives at an inquest yesterday. Addressing the families of Mr Yue Feng and Ms Liu Quing, both 19 and with an address at 2A Blackhall Square, North King Street, Dublin, Dr Farrell said all Irish people would wish that foreign students could come to this country to study in safety. He extended his deepest sympathy to both families.

He said he could not comment further on the circumstances of the deaths, as there would be a criminal trial and he adjourned the inquests pending the completion of the trial. The deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Therese Cassidy, said both students had died due to strangulation.

Formal identification of Mr Yue was carried out by his uncle, Mr Yue Lian-Cheng. Mr Yue's father, Mr Yue Lian-Sheng, was also present for the inquest. The identification of Ms Quing was confirmed by her uncle, Mr Song Shoatian. Insp John McMahon of Bridewell Garda station, told the coroner that criminal proceedings had been initiated and he sought an adjournment of the inquest.
