Twelve teams of Dublin Corporation workers have removed snow from and gritted some 700 km or 437.5 miles of roads within the city limits since the snow started on Wednesday night.

A corporation spokeswoman said the teams were gritting the roads on an almost 24-hour basis. The local authority has concentrated its resources on national and secondary routes and bus lanes.

Pedestrians have complained about slippery footpaths. The spokeswoman said the corporation had limited resources and did not clear footpaths. She pointed out that if snow is cleared from footpaths, the ground ices over and can be even more dangerous.

She added that the corporation's resources were concentrated on the roads to assist public transport and those getting to work.
