A member of the staff of Tralee Town Council has been suspended on full pay to facilitate an investigation into tourism projects in which the council is involved, a spokesman for Tralee Town Council has confirmed. Anne Lucey reports.

The suspension will allow "the full investigation of a number of issues relating to tourism projects in Tralee and their potential impact on Tralee Town Council," the spokesman said yesterday.

The town council became directly involved in a number of tourism projects in the 1990s. The most notorious has been the Jeanie Johnston replica Famine ship project.

But as well as the Jeanie Johnston, Tralee Town Cuncil has invested in and is directly involved in a museum and exhibition centre, a windmill, and a steam train and railtrack.

SIPTU last night called for the "immediate reinstatement" of the suspended man.

"As far as the suspended official is concerned, he has done nothing wrong . He acted at all times under the direction of the council," said Mr Tony Dunne, branch secretary of the local authority professional officers' branch of the union.
