The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is to lobby political parties, independent TDs and MEPs to hold elections and referendums at the weekend in line with most of the rest of Europe, and to extend voting hours.

Its president, Mr Julian Hassett, said yesterday there were ethical as well as practical considerations involved. "The Government of the day should not be allowed to gain political advantage through the option of selecting the day of the week a vote is taken and by determining polling opening and closing times."
