Councillor's car damaged in explosion

A crude device exploded under a car belonging to a Northern Ireland Labour Party councillor yesterday

A crude device exploded under a car belonging to a Northern Ireland Labour Party councillor yesterday. The car was parked outside the home of Cllr Mark Langhammer on the Shore Road at Newtownabbey on the northern outskirts of Belfast. No one was injured in the blast.

Mr Langhammer said he noticed damage to his car as he was about to take his children to school. Police said army bomb disposal experts had removed the remains of what appeared to be an improvised explosive device from the scene for examination.

The police Ombudsman yesterday initiated an inquiry after a man was shot by an officer responding to an emergency call-out. The man suffered a bullet wound to the leg during the incident at the Ballysally housing estate in Coleraine, Co Derry. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, a device surrounded by nails exploded at a garage in Obin Street, Portadown, Co Armagh, shortly after midnight, damaging a wall and a petrol pump. Officers were also investigating an explosion shortly after midnight yesterday behind a house in Wyndham Street, north Belfast. Army bomb disposal experts had checked the area and recovered the remnants of an improvised device, said a police spokesman. No one was injured in either explosion.
