The High Court has approved what is believed to be the largest settlement in a medical-negligence action.

A total of €4.5 million was awarded against the National Maternity Hospital on behalf of an Irish-born child of Israeli parents who suffers from cerebral palsy.

The child, Haya Shiri Kraft, who sued through her father - Mr Amir Kraft - suffers from severe brain damage.

The award was made without admission of liability on the part of the defendant.
