The International Cricket Council is considering instituting football's card system to discipline players, according to reports today.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed is working on a card system to avert a repeat of the recent crisis in the test series between India and South Africa, according to a report in the Australiannewspaper.

The Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) included the card system in a proposal it submitted to the ACB last May, the newspaper reported.

Under the card system, players would receive a white warning card for low-level breaches, a yellow card signalling a two-hour send off and red card for the worst behaviour, which would result in an automatic send-off for the match.

Demerit points were also proposed, in which a player who accumulated too many points over a 12-month period would serve an automatic suspension.
