Man charged with robbing pensioner in Limerick

State will object to bail for 23-year-old accused, who was arrested on Monday

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with the robbery of an 85- year-old man in Limerick city last week.

Martin Morey (23), with an address at McGarry House, St Alphonsus Street, Limerick, is charged with robbing the man of a wallet containing €80 in cash and a mobile phone valued at €50 at Roxboro Shopping Centre on July 30th.

This was contrary to Section 14 of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act, a vacation sitting of Limerick District Court heard.

Detective Garda Michael Dunne, of Roxboro Garda station, gave evidence of arresting the accused at Collins Avenue in Limerick on Monday. The court heard Mr Morey made no reply when he was formally charged yesterday.

Solicitor Sarah Ryan was assigned to represent the accused whom the court heard is in receipt of social welfare. Sgt John Moloney said the State would be objecting to bail but Ms Ryan said her client was reserving his position on bail.

Judge John King remanded the accused in custody until Wednesday, when he is due to appear before the same court again.

Ms Ryan said she would inform the State if she intended to apply for bail on that occasion.
