The death of a pensioner struck by a Garda car while crossing the road is to be the subject of a criminal trial, an inquest in Dublin has been told.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed a prosecution following the death of a Dublin mother of four, Elizabeth Core (75).
Ms Core, from Corkagh View in Clonalkin suffered head and chest trauma in the incident and died on August 28th, 2014. She was struck by a marked Garda car as she was crossing the road at the junction of Fonthill Road and St John’s Road in Clondalkin.
Dublin Coroner’s Court heard investigations into the incident were complete, a file was submitted to the DPP and a prosecution was directed as a result.
An inquest into her death, which was opened and adjourned last February, was further adjourned by the coroner, Dr Brian Farrell.
The incident was investigated by the Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc). Gsoc investigator James Butler confirmed to the coroner that a criminal trial “was in prospect”.
“A file has been completed and submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the case. The book of evidence will be served on January 7th for prosecution,” Mr Butler said.
A postmortem was carried out by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy at Tallaght hospital on the day after Ms Core’s death.
Dr Farrell told family members in attendance at a previous inquest hearing that the cause of death was “head and chest trauma due to a vehicular impact”.
The Coroner’s Court previously heard from Mr Butler that the Garda vehicle was responding to a panic alarm when the incident happened.
Dr Farrell adjourned the inquest until after criminal proceedings are complete.
