Four men arrested following a raid on a post office in a Co Kilkenny town remain in Garda custody today.

A number of masked men entered the premises on Main Street Urlingford just before 12.30pm on Monday, threatened staff and smashed a window with a hammer. The men then escaped with a quantity of cash.

The gang escaped in a getaway vehicle which was set alight at Ardragh before the men transferred to a second car.

Gardaí mounted road blocks in the area and three men were arrested after a vehicle was stopped near Freshford.

A fourth man was later arrested in Kilkenny.

The men were held overnight at separate Garda stations under section four of the Criminal Justice Act, which means they can be questioned for a total of 24 hours before they must be released or charged.

Two of the men are being held at Kilkenny Garda station, another is at Thomastown and the fourth is detained at Carlow Garda station.
