Gardaí have detected 974 motorists speeding over a 24 hour period ending at 7am, three times more than the numbers caught for the offence on the same day last year.
Additional speed checks were carried out between 7am yesterday until this morning with 124,818 vehicles checked as part of Operation Slowdown.
The 974 caught since 7am yesterday compares to 298 drivers detected on May 31st last year, which was also the Friday of the June Bank Holiday, typically one of the busiest days of the year on the roads.
According to gardaí, the highest speed detectedyesterday was a car travelling at 147km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R238 at Lisfannan, Buncrana, in Co Donegal.
Other “notable occurrences” included a vehicle speeding at 90km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N11 at Stillorgan, Dublin, while on the N52 at Woodfield, in Birr, Co Offaly, a motorist was detected speeding at 91km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
Head of the Garda Traffic Corps Assistant Commissioner John Twomey thanked motorists who complied with the law and warned that gardaí will "rigorously enforce road traffic legislation" over the weekend.
