Gardaí release man questioned over 1987 Drogheda double murder

62-year-old detained arrested in connection with the murder of two INLA members

Gardaí have have released a man arrested on Monday in connection with the double murder of two INLA members more than 30 years ago.

Thomas 'Ta' Power (33) and John Gerard O'Reilly (26) were shot dead in the Rossnaree Hotel near Drogheda as part of an internal feud in January, 1987. The men were both senior INLA figures.

The 62-year-old suspect was arrested in Dublin and was taken for questioning at Drogheda Garda station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

Gardaí said the investigation into the 30-year-old double murder was still continuing and that the arrest was on foot of new information being received.

Two other men were injured in the attack detectives believe was carried out by a rival faction within the INLA. The victims were at the hotel for talks with the other faction when two masked gunmen walked in and shot them.
