The killing of a man in Drogheda in the early hours of this morning has this evening been upgraded to a murder inquiry.

Wayne McQuillan (30), of Marian Park, Drogheda, Co Louth, was stabbed at about 1.45am in the Rathmullen Park area of the town.

The incident was upgraded after the results of a postmortem this afternoon at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, became known.

Mr McQuillan had been taken to the hospital after the stabbing and was later pronounced dead.

A 40-year-old woman was arrested after the stabbing at Rathmullen Park and is being held at Drogheda Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
