Man arrested in operation targeting dissident republicans

Suspect is the fourth person to be arrested in relation to the operation since Wednesday

A man was arrested by gardaí on Thursday as part of an ongoing operation into dissident republican activity in the Dublin area.

The man in his 20s was apprehended by officers attached to the Special Detective Unit, and is currently being detained at Irishtown Garda Station under Section 30 – Offences Against the State Act 1939.

The man is the fourth person to be arrested in relation to the operation since Wednesday, when three men in their 20s were taken into custody in Dublin and Laois.

One of them, Ryan Glennon (24), appeared before a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court on Wednesday night.

Mr Glennon, of Macken Villas, Macken Street, Dublin 2 was charged with membership of an unlawful organisation within the State, namely Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the Irish Republican Army or IRA on May 13th, 2015.

Detective Sergeant Padraig Boyce told State solicitor Mr Michael O’Donovan that he formally arrested the accused Mr Glennon at Londonbridge Road, Dublin 4 at 5.16pm on Wednesday.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Alison Lindsay and Judge William Hamill, remanded Mr Glennon in custody to appear before the court via video on Friday.

One of the other men was released without charge pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The fourth man remains in custody at Irishtown Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 – Offences Against the State Act 1939.

Investigations are continuing.
