A 35-year-old man has been charged today in connection with the assault of a police officer in Belfast yesterday.

The attack took place during a loyalist march in the city centre, protesting against alleged “political policing” and the decision to restrict the flying of the Union flag at Belfast City Hall.

One police officer was knocked unconscious and a second injured during the protest, which otherwise passed off peacefully.

Around 3,000 people took part in the rally outside City Hall and a band led the crowds away at 1pm.
