The attack took place in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry in the early hours of Sunday morning, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

The man, whose age and name have not been given, is receiving treatment in hospital for the gunshot wounds.

The incident in Derry is one of a number of shootings in Northern Ireland in recent days, including the murder of takeaway delivery driver Dan Murray, a 55-year-old father-of-six, in west Belfast on Monday night.

The killing was the fourth gun attack in the city in four days.

PSNI Inspector Gregory Smith appealed for witnesses or anyone with information on the Ballymagroarty shooting to come forward.

They are urged to contact officers at Strand Road police station by calling 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
