Gardaí are investigating the stabbing of Dublin football star Jonny Cooper in Dublin yesterday morning.

Stills taken from CCTV footage circulated widely on social media last night appear to show the 24-year-old being attacked by a man on the steps of a building on Dorset St.

Cooper sustained several head and neck wounds in the assault which happened at 5.30am yesterday.

The Na Fianna player was taken to the nearby Mater Hospital for treatment before being discharged later in the day.

In a tweet posted yesterday afternoon, the footballer said he was “absolutely humbled” by the support and messages of goodwill he has received since the attack.

His club also thanked the public for their support as messages wishing him a speedy recovery came in from clubs and GAA supporters around the country.
