Five million cigarettes with a retail value of almost €2.4 million have been seized by Revenue’s customs officers at Rosslare port.

The cigarettes including Minsk and Winston brands were detected when officers stopped and scanned a truck as it arrived on a ferry from Cherbourg yesterday, Revenue said in a statement.

The cigarettes were concealed in six large tanks, which had been described on the ship’s manifest as ‘thermal storage tanks.’

A Lithuanian national was interviewed by Revenue officials and investigations are ongoing, the statement added.
