A 21-year old man is being questioned by the PSNI over the alleged assault of Sinn Féin assembly member Gerry Kelly in Belfast on Saturday night.

It is understood the MLA for North Belfast suffered facial injuries.

In a statment Sunday, Mr Kelly said: “I have made a formal complaint to the PSNI after I was assaulted in Belfast city centre last night.”

Police said the incident happened in the Gordon Street area of the city centre at around 11.20pm.

The 21-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of common assault.
