The Minister for the Environment, Mr Cullen, has been appointed by Fianna Fáil to run its campaign in the local elections next year. He will be assisted by the Minister for Defence, Mr Smith.

With its conventions for the local elections nearly complete, the party plans a series of public rallies on the weekend of November 21st at which Ministers will speak.

The party's spokeswoman said it had decided to conduct its constituency conventions for the European election in the first two weeks of January.

This was to give candidates time to prepare their campaigns in the revised constituencies, she added.
